Finding Your Comedic Voice with Matthew Brian Cohen

In this 4 week workshop, we’ll look to get your sketch packet into shape. We’ll get you writing different kinds of sketches, stretching those writing muscles to go beyond your comfort zone and plumb the depths of human behavior for interesting, unique comedic premises. But most importantly, we’ll get you writing sketches that YOU find funny and are genuinely excited to film or put up on stage.

Students will be asked to bring in one written sketch on the first day, and be prepared to write at least one new sketch a week for the duration of the class.

Matthew has written and directed countless sketch shows at the UCB Theater for over a decade in both Los Angeles and New York. His writing has appeared in McSweeney’s, The Onion, College Humor, Honest Trailers, and a bunch of other places, too.

WORKSHOPS at Thymele Arts on Santa Monica/Western: First class is Monday April 4th from 7pm-9pm. Remaining Workshops Tuesdays 7pm-9pm (April 12, 19, 26)

Description

In this 4 week workshop, we’ll look to get your sketch packet into shape. We’ll get you writing different kinds of sketches, stretching those writing muscles to go beyond your comfort zone and plumb the depths of human behavior for interesting, unique comedic premises. But most importantly, we’ll get you writing sketches that YOU find funny and are genuinely excited to film or put up on stage.

Writers can expect to leave the class with at least 3 solid sketches that represent their unique comedic voice, having learned some tools to make their comedic ideas shine the brightest.
Plus, it will be nice to see people in person and maybe make connections with other writers!

Some sketch writing experience will be necessary to get the most out of this class. Students will be asked to bring in one written sketch on the first day, and be prepared to write at least one new sketch a week for the duration of the class.
